If you’ve been following along with my Capsule 101 series, then you’ve read about the whole process here, Phase 1 “The Purge” here, and Phase 2 “The Try On” here. Today, we get to move into some fun as we get closer and closer to the best part (the shopping, of course!).
Every woman’s capsule will be unique based on her specific needs. For example, I am a stay at home mom. I do not need heels, suits, or dresses. My wardrobe mainly consists of jeans and tops that vary based on the season. I know some stay at home moms who wear dresses all the time and some who live in athleisure wear. The climate where you live will also play a big role, as here in California we don’t have a lot of variance between summer & winter weather so a lot of my clothing I wear year around with just minor tweaks as the seasons change. There isn’t a wrong way to do it, this process is about simplifying your life and making getting dressed (and shopping for clothes) easier.
So before we begin any real research, we must identify what items you already have in your closet. Get a notepad and write down each item you have so you can identify any holes. I like to have the following basics on hand all the time:
- Blue Jeans (non distressed)
- Black Jeans
- White Jeans
- Distressed Jeans
- Girlfriend/Boyfriend Jeans
- White T-Shirt
- Black Camisole
- White Camisole
- Denim Jacket
- Chambray shirt
These items make up about 1/2 of my wardrobe – I would swap out maybe 1-2 pairs of jeans for shorts in the spring/summer and then round out the capsule with cardigans, more neutral tops, maybe a sweatshirt or jacket, etc.
Pinterest is a great place to start doing research. You can search for “Sprimg Capsule Wardrobe” and get tons of images to give you ideas, another good option to search on Pinterest would be the 5 Piece French wardrobe. For me, the 5 Price French Wardrobe is a bit too dressed up for my day-t0-day, but it does give you a good idea of what basics you need to have in your closet to round out a capsule wardrobe.
Once you have pinned a million ideas and taken an inventory of what you already own, you can identify what you want to add to round out a capsule. This might be a really good pair of black pants (or black denim) or a wear with everything denim jacket. Or maybe just some basic tops or a really versatile t-shirt dress. This will totally depend on what you already own and what types of clothes you wear to match your lifestyle.
Identify these items and make a list (I do love a good list), and then the fun stuff starts!
